Folklife Gallery

The folklife gallery contains a wealth of agricultural tools and machinery, as well as a mangle, plough, turf cutters threshers and quern stones. There is also an audio-visual display dealing with Ned Gavin, a famous Cavan cooper, along with a display of his tools and barrels. Finally, a recreation of an old-style thatched house and kitchen helps to bring this very popular display to life.

The Folklife Gallery

The very popular Folklife Gallery demonstrates the way of life and traditions of the people of Cavan and Ireland. Through this journey into Ireland's past, we can see just how life and work have evolved through time. The gallery contains a wide-ranging collection of farm implements relating to people's working lives in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. An excellent audio-visual display focuses on the work of Ned Gavin, a famous Cavan cooper, whose tools and barrels are also on display here. A recreation of a thatched roof cottage also transports the viewer back in time to a different world, with the pot of spuds boiling over a roaring turf fire, and bread-making also going on. The Folklife Gallery is very popular with both young and old, who either remember these scenes fondly or view this time with a greater realisation of both the hardships and happy times of this era of Ireland's recent past.
